Hyd Vet Case: The Cop Who Led The Encounter Had Led A Similar Encounter On Acid Attack Accused In 2008

Even as India has woken up to the news that the four accused in the rape and murder of the Hyderabad vet have been killed in a police encounter, this isn’t the first time the cop that led the encounter has been involved in an incident like this.

The top cop who is handling the Hyderabad vet’s rape case, Cyberabad police chief CV Sajjanar, had been involved in a eerily similar encounter in 2008, The News Minute reports. Back then, the AP police had gunned down three men accused of throwing acid on two women engineering students. The students— Swapnika and Pranitha— of the Kakatiya Institute of Technology in Warangal town were attacked after Swapnika had rejected the proposal of Srinivas, one of the accused. Srinivas Rao, 25, the main accused in the case, and his associates P Harikrishna, 24, and B Sanjay, 22, were killed in the encounter. That encounter too had been led by CV Sajjanar, who was then the Superintendent of Police in Warangal .

Sajjanar had then said that a police team had gone with the accused to the scene of the crime to collect evidence. However, the men reportedly tried to attack the cops with crude bombs. He said that the cops opened fire in self-defence, killing all three accused.

After the encounter, Sajjanar had earned the moniker of ‘the encounter cop’. The arrests were made 48 hours within the attack on the girl, and the encounter happened within days. Though the families of the accused and rights activists had questioned the encounter, Sajjanar became a local hero.

Today morning, the four men accused in the rape and murder of the Hyderabad vet were gunned down by the Telangana police. The police said that they had taken the accused to the crime scene to recreate the events of the fateful night, at which point they tried to snatch pistols from the cops. The four were shot in retaliatory gunfire.
