Tablighi Jamaat Members Attack Female Doctor, Doctors Forced To Hide In Room As Mob Tries to Break Door

The cases of misbehaviour by Tablighi Jamaat members against doctors keep coming in — and they are getting more serious.

A female doctor was assaulted by members of the Tablighi Jamaat at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital in New Delhi, reports OpIndia. The incident occurred on Tuesday, when patients attacked a female doctor inside a surgical ward. As a male doctor tried to rescue female doctor from the unruly mob, he was also manhandled by the unruly mob. The doctors had to hide inside a room to save themselves.

“This letter is to bring to your notice an incident of assault which happened in surgical block 5A at 5:20 pm on 14.4.2020,” a letter of complaint by the resident doctors said. “One particular patient started hurling verbal abuses and passed vulgar comments on a female resident doctor on duty. When objected upon by the accompanying doctor, the patient gathered a large number of other patients posted in the ward and started threatening the doctors and staff on duty. The healthcare staff had to rush to the duty room and hide inside while all the time while the patient with the mob tried to break open the door. ” the letter says.

“(The incident) could have caused fatal injuries to any of the doctors,” the letter adds.

This is only the latest in a series of incidents in which members of the Tablighi Jamaat have been not only obstructed the work of health officials, but also behaving in a way that could actively spread the infection. When attendees were being evacuated from the Markaz, a doctor had said on video that they were spitting out of the buses being used to transport them. The next day, railways authorities had said that Jamaat attendees were spitting directly on doctors while being transported. Most shockingly, a Ghaziabad hospital had complained that Jamaat attendees were roaming the wards nude, and harassing female nurses.

At this point, the Yogi government had stepped in, and declared that female doctors and nurses would no longer attend to Jamaat patients, and people who’d misbehaved would have the NSA slapped against them. Even after the announcement, assorted reports of misbehaviour had continued streaming in, including reports of Jamaat attendees breaking quarantine rules to offer Namaaz, and also arguing with doctors. An FIR had been filed against Jamaat members for defecating in the corridors of these isolation wards, and in UP, a Covid positive Jamaat attendee had tried to escape from hospital and had been arrested three kms away. In Delhi, a case had been filed against Tablighi Jamaat members for urinating in bottles and then throwing them out of their rooms. Just yesterday, a corona positive Tablighi Jamaat member had been booked for spitting on a nurse in Trichy.
