Covid Positive Tablighi Jamaat Attendee Spits On Nurse In Tamil Nadu, Booked By Police

The instances of Tablighi Jamaat attendees misbehaving with health officials aren’t limited to a few locations in India — they are being reported from across the country.

A person who tested positive for Covid-19 reportedly spat on a nurse in the isolation ward of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli, India Today reports. As per reports, the accused was among the 36 patients from the “single source” event in the capital of the country last month. The Tamil Nadu government now uses the term “single source” instead of saying Tablighi Jamaat.

The patient in question had been admitted to the hospital’s coronavirus ward on Saturday. Apart from spitting on the nurse, he also allegedly also removed his mask and threw it at her, which enraged the hospital staff and other patients.

The hospital officials have filed a complaint with the police and based on the complaint a case has been registered against the patient under Sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease), 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease) and 271 (Disobedience to quarantine rule) of the Indian Penal Code.

“It was a serious crime under the present conditions with so many restrictions in force to prevent the spread of coronavirus,” the police said. “Ever since his admission in the ward, he has not been cooperating with the medical staff,” police added.

This is only the latest in a series of incidents in which members of the Tablighi Jamaat have been not only obstructed the work of health officials, but also behaving in a way that could actively spread the infection. When attendees were being evacuated from the Markaz, a doctor had said on video that they were spitting out of the buses being used to transport them. The next day, railways authorities had said that Jamaat attendees were spitting directly on doctors while being transported. Most shockingly, a Ghaziabad hospital had complained that Jamaat attendees were roaming the wards nude, and harassing female nurses.

At this point, the Yogi government had stepped in, and declared that female doctors and nurses would no longer attend to Jamaat patients, and people who’d misbehaved would have the NSA slapped against them. Even after the announcement, assorted reports of misbehaviour had continued streaming in, including reports of Jamaat attendees breaking quarantine rules to offer Namaaz, and also arguing with doctors. An FIR had been filed against Jamaat members for defecating in the corridors of these isolation wards, and in UP, a Covid positive Jamaat attendee had tried to escape from hospital and had been arrested three kms away. In Delhi, a case had been filed against Tablighi Jamaat members for urinating in bottles and then throwing them out of their rooms.
