Social media is a great way for people to get the message out — but it’s also a great way for others to know where’s people’s allegiances really are.
Several prominent left-liberals — who claim to be independent people who only speak about injustice and social issues as their conscience dictates — took to Twitter today, and in near-unison, sang praises of Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray. Interestingly, all tweets spoke of the “leadership” of the Chief Minister, and heaped praises on him for his handling of the Covid pandemic. Sonam Kapoor began proceedings by tweeting at 4:50 pm.
4:50 pm: Sonam Kapoor
“You are true leaders,” gushed Sonam Kapoor. “Really lucky to have you lead us,” she said, tagging Uddhav Thackeray.
4:55 pm Nikhil Wagle
5 minutes later, journalist Nikhil Wagle, whose Twitter timeline contains little except rants against the BJP, said much the same. “I think he has emerged as an able leader in this crisis,” he said, echoing the leader line that Sonam Kapoor had used.
6:23 pm: Javed Akhtar
At 6:23 pm, Javed Akhtar tweeted something similar, once again mentioning leadership. “Maharashtra under leadership of CM Uddhav Thackeray needs to be congratulated for handling the Covid 19 with clear directives. “My salute,” he signed off.
6:33 pm: Swara Bhasker
10 minutes later, Swara Bhaskar again called Uddhav Thackeray a leader. “Spoken. Like. A. True. Leader. Respect!” she said, while adding innumerable happy emoijs to her tweet.
6:42 pm: Swati Chaturvedi
9 minutes after that, Swati Chaturvedi, who has written a whole book bashing the BJP, again repeated the leader refrain. “Read this thread real leadership from Uddhav Thackeray,” she wrote.

7:01 pm Sushant Singh
Full time BJP critic and part time director Sushant Singh went next, at 7:01 pm. He too repeated the leadership trope. “This is an appreciation tweet, in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the Maharashtra Govt has been doing a wonderful job under the leadership of CM Mr Uddhav Thakarey,” he said.
Now it’s entirely possible that prominent left leaning voices on Twitter, all independently, and around the same time, suddenly realized how amazing the leadership of Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray was. Or it’s possible that they were given instructions to tweet these lines, or possibly compensated, monetarily or otherwise, to toe the line. We’ll let you decide what it was.
