When the left speaks of freedom of speech and expression, it doesn’t seem to mean freedom of speech for all.
Left-liberals have been bemoaning the lack of freedom of expression in India ever since it was revealed that the Additional District and Sessions Court in Indore had rejected the bail pleas filed by ‘comedian’ Munawar Faruqui, and it was likely that he’d spend another two weeks in jail. Munwar Farooqui had been arrested last week in Indore for allegedly making indecent comments on Hindu deities.
“Munawar Faruqui is still in custody for “jokes” he never told and imaginary offences . It’s been a week now. Why is his bail being constantly denied? Because he’s Muslim,” wrote fellow alleged comedian Aditi Mittal, in spite of a series of videos of Faruqui mocking Hindu gods being freely available on the internet.
“A fellow Indian, a fellow comedian is in jail and got beaten up by a mob because of the words he uttered,” wrote Varun Grover on Instagram.
Vir Das took to Twitter to piously say that you can’t stop jokes and laughter.
Other accounts also hinted that Faruqui had been jailed because he was Muslim.
But leftists conveniently forget that not too long ago, a man had been jailed for over 10 months for the same crime as Munawar Faruqui’s — offending religious sentiments. And the man hadn’t been Muslim, but Hindu.
In 2016, Kamlesh Tiwari had spent 10 months in jail for the crime of insulting the Prophet Mohammed. Tiwari had been booked under the draconian National Securities Act by the UP Police in 2015 for ‘insulting remarks’ against the Prophet. He’d spent nearly a year in jail waiting for relief, before he was bailed out.
Left-liberals, at that point, had not only completely ignored Tiwari’s stint in jail, but also also similarly turned a blind eye when religious organizations had put out a Rs. 1.5 crore bounty for beheading Kamlesh Tiwari. Leftists had also not spoken up against the huge rallies had been held in UP, in which charged crowds had demanded retribution for his remarks.
And perhaps most egregiously, left-liberals had also turned a blind eye to Kamlesh Tiwari’s eventual assassination. On 18th October 2019, Kamlesh Tiwari was stabbed multiple times and shot in the face, all over a remark about the Prophet Mohammad.
If leftists really cared about freedom of speech, they would’ve tweeted about Kamlesh Tiwari. They would’ve made Instagram posts about Kamlesh Tiwari. They would’ve held candlelight marches and vigils for Kamlesh Tiwari. But the fact that they chose to do none of that shows that it’s not freedom of speech that leftists care about — what they seem to care about is propagating their own victimhood narrative in every situation possible.
