Far-Left Propaganda Site HuffPost Shuts Down India Edition

Top media companies are discovering that there isn’t really a market for peddling far-left propaganda in India.

HuffPost, one of the world’s most prominent far-left online publications, has shut down its India edition. Users visiting HuffPost’s India site are now greeted with the message: “As of November 24,Huff[post India will no longer be publishing content. For more great global content, visit HuffPost.com. We thank you for your support and readership.”

The development comes after HuffPost was acquired by Buzzfeed last week in an all-stock deal. Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti had then said that HuffPost would continue running its site as before, but it appears that there were no future plans for the India website. With the site shuttering, it would seem that this is the end of the road of HuffPost in India, which had entered the country in late 2014 with the Times Group. Its partnership with the Times Group had collapsed in 2017, and it had then gone on to run its operations independently.

HuffPost’s India version, as with its global version, had often been criticized for its far-left reporting, and deliberate spreading of propaganda. In March this year, HuffPost India had spread fake news around how Delhi hospitals had discriminated against riot victims. It had also carried a propaganda piece on Electoral Bonds, which had been riddled with inaccuracies. Another article had spread misinformation that astrologers were going to treat patients in Madhya Pradesh. The site had also been regularly mocked for trying to whitewash Aurangzeb’s crimes.

Far-left portals aren’t having the best time in India of late. In April this year, The Quint had fired 45 employees. In July last year, Scroll had let go of 16 employees.
