Shaheen Bagh shooter Kapil Gurjar has had the briefest of stints with the Bharatiya Janta Party.
Earlier today, Kapil Gurjar had been inducted into the Bharatiya Janta Party by its Ghaziabad unit. Pictures of the induction had been shared on social media, with a garlanded Kapil Gurjar being welcomed into the party.
But hours after his induction, the BJP now cancelled his membership. “Today some BSP members were inducted into the Bharatiya Janta Party,” an announcement by the BJP Mahanagar Head Sanjiv Sharma said. “Among those who’d joined was Kapil Gurjar. The local unit didn’t have knowledge of his involvement with the Shaheen Bagh shooting incident. Once the party was made aware of his involvement, his membership was terminated. He is terminated from the party with immediate effect,” the notice said.
Kapil Gurjar had hit national headlines in February this year when he had fired two rounds in the air at the Shaheen Bagh protests. After opening fire, Gurjar had also chanted “Jai Shri Ram” and said, “hamare desh me aur kisi ki nahi chalegi, sirf Hinduon ki chalegi (only Hindus shall have a say in our country, no one else). He was then immediately arrested and led away by the police.
It had then turned out that Kapil Gurjar was at that point a member of the Aam Aadmi Party. His pictures of previously joining the Aam Aadmi Party had gone viral after the incident.
Kapil Gurjar had spent several weeks in custody, before he was eventually released. After his release, he seems to have joined a group of BSP members, who in turn joined the BJP at its Ghaziabad unit. Kapil Gurjar seems to have had ties with the BSP too — his father had reportedly fought Delhi’s MCD elections on a BSP ticket in 2012. But as pictures of his joining the BJP went viral, and drew criticism from BJP’s own supporters, the party appears to have acted quickly and cancelled his membership.
